Signature based anti monitoring programs work by scanning computer files and comparing known pieces of software code against known spyware signature files in their database. Spyware signature definition files are created after analyzing spyware for pieces of code specific to its program, if the spyware manufacturer changes the known signature file, your anti-monitoring software won’t detect it. This is why it’s so important to keep your signature database up to date. Signature based anti spyware programs work along the same principal as the process used to identify a criminal by comparing the specific characteristics of a fingerprint left at a crime scene to a fingerprint database of known criminals.
Heuristic based programs perform a more in depth examination of a computer system by analyzing the computers files and running processes examining them for anomalies that may indicate the presence of spyware. Put another way anomaly detection is a deviation from what would be the presumed norm from a program or file.
